Sacha Baron Cohen was/is a comedic genius. However, I wasn't really taken by "The Dictator," which was a box-office/critical disappointment and made the comedian disappear from the spotlight ... that is until now.
His, still unannounced, new show for Showtime has been teased to us via a cryptic tweet which has Dick Cheney signing a waterboarding kit. Yes, the evil-doing Vice-Prez himself, responsible for a lot of the torture that happened at Guantanamo Bay, seems to have been duped/interviewed by Cohen's latest creation, a character that sounds like a hybrid of Ali G and Borat.
Supposedly, Cohen has been secretly filming for the last year. The vid hints at a potential “Da Ali G Show”-esque new series, but with new characters.
After being offered the waterboard kit, Cheney exclaims “That’s a first. That’s the first time I’ve ever signed a waterboard,” after which he signs the damn thing.
Cohen will always be a legend for creating Borat, Bruno," and Ali G for HBO's now legendary "Da Ali G Show."
I wrote this about "Borat" WAY back in 2006:
"Sacha Baron Cohen made a real name for himself in 2006. I was already a fan of his brilliant but retired Da Ali G Show but it's a real kick to see him bring back his loveably racist Kazakhstani man Borat Sagdiyev. The real kicker of the film is that its brilliance doesn't just lie in its guerilla-style doc filmmaking but that the laughs come with a relevantly-delivered satirical sting. Cohen's Borat brings out the worst in America, a homophobic, racist culturally divided nation that hides beneath its hate. I don't think a film has ever exposed this much of the country's hate before."
This untitled Sacha Baron Cohen project is rumored to premiere on Showtime July 15.
