If you ever wondered why Guy Pearce was never cast again in a Christopher Nolan movie, well, we finally have our answer, and it’s an infuriating one.
Pearce, whose lead performance in “Memento” belongs in the Nolan time capsule, is now saying that a WB executive blacklisted him from ever appearing in another one Nolan’s projects.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, the actor recalled an unnamed executive at the studio criticizing his lead performance in “Memento.” The WB executive’s lack of enthusiasm for Pearce subsequently got the actor blacklisted from working at both the studio and with Nolan.
Nolan began exclusively making films for WB in 2002, and only parted ways with them in 2020. “Oppenheimer” was a Universal Pictures film, and he is teaming up again with them for his next film — Pearce hasn’t been cast in that project.
“He spoke to me about roles a few times over the years,” Pearce said. “[It was about] the first ‘Batman’ and ‘The Prestige.’ But there was an executive at Warner Bros. who quite openly said to my agent, ‘I don’t get Guy Pearce. I’m never going to get Guy Pearce. I’m never going to employ Guy Pearce.’ So, in a way, that’s good to know. I mean, fair enough; there are some actors I don’t get. But it meant I could never work with Chris.”
Pearce confirmed that he missed out on playing Ra’s al Ghul in Nolan’s “Batman Begins, a role that eventually went to Liam Neeson instead.
“They flew me to London to discuss the Liam Neeson role and I think it was decided on my flight that I wasn’t going to be in the movie,” Pearce said. “So I get there and Chris is like ‘Hey, you want to see the Batmobile and get dinner?'”
I've always wanted Pearce in more Nolan movies, but never understood why he wasn't there. Nolan usually repeats his actors in many of his films, and someone with the talent of Pearce (“L.A. Confidential,” “Lawless”) should have absolutely been cast in more of the filmmaker’s films.
