I love Francis Ford Coppola’s persistence. He’s going to probably lose well over $100M on his “Megalopolis” gamble and yet he’s already lined up his next two films — both being self-financed.
As I had reported in April, Coppola set up his next film, “Glimpses of the Moon,” many months before “Megalopolis” premiered at Cannes, and it now looks like it might be shooting very soon.
Coppola is telling The Washington Post that after he celebrates the Christmas holidays with his family, he’ll be moving to London, which is where production on ‘Glimpses of the Moon’ is set to begin. The filmmaker describes it as a “strange 30s-style musical.” No cast has so far been revealed for the film.
‘Glimpses’ will be an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s novel of the same name, and “inspired” by Leo McCarey’s “The Awful Truth.” Both deal with married couples amicably splitting up only to find it harder to let go of each other than they initially thought.
The filmmaker had previously described the upcoming film as having “strong dance and musical elements.” He added, “I’ve turned it into a very odd confection.” It should be noted that the one and only musical Coppola ever directed, 1981’s “One From the Heart,” was also what one might call an “odd confection.”
Coppola goes on to state that ‘Glimpses’ was “funded the conventional way, with the help of national subsidies, because I’m all borrowed out,” and that it “won’t be cheap by any means”, but unlike “Megalopolis,” it won’t be an “epic.”
Speaking of epic, after ‘Glimpses’ is shot and released, Coppola will be planning his very final film, titled ‘Distant Vision,’ which he’s described as being “immense” and “more ambitious than ‘Megalopolis.’ You can read more about that one here.
