Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ Drops First Trailer, Sets November Release

May 31, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Netflix’s annual fan event, Tudum 2025, went live Saturday evening, and buried somewhere between screaming fans and overproduced promo montages was a genuinely notable moment: the first official look at Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein.”

Del Toro, who’s been talking about making this movie since before streaming was a thing, was on stage to present the trailer, which hit the internet shortly after. There’s a lot of CGI in this one, but it was to be expected. As with all del Toros, the production design is to die for.

The film is a reimagining of Mary Shelley’s 1818 classic—though let’s be honest, if anyone’s been spiritually prepping for this story their whole life, it’s del Toro.

“This story has lived with me since childhood,” he said recently. “I’ve tried to make this film for over two decades. Some say I’m obsessed with Frankenstein, and they’re probably right. Over the years, the character has become so entwined with my life, it feels autobiographical. It’s the most personal film I’ve ever made.”

That “personal” vision stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the creature, Mia Goth as Elizabeth, and Christoph Waltz as Dr. Pretorius.

After years of circling this project, del Toro finally got it off the ground with Netflix footing the bill—likely hoping for awards-season gold and to lure millions upon millions of eyeballs to its streaming platform.

Del Toro is the visual wizard behind such films as “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “The Shape of Water,” “The Devil’s Backbone,” and “Cronos.” His last film, “Pinocchio,” also produced by Netflix, won the Best Animated Film Oscar in 2024.

“Frankenstein” hits Netflix in November 2025. Expect something lush, operatic, and almost definitely filled with gothic candlelight.
