‘Knock Down the House’: Love Her or Not, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Doc Will Fire You Up [Review]

May 1, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Young, female, brown, carrying oh-so-terrifying socialist ideals of equality for the underrepresented, and not afraid to speak her mind loudly, U.S. House of Representatives politician and activist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez currently has the Washington D.C. establishment quaking in their boots. Laugh if you want to, but there’s absolutely a reason a brand new, relatively inexperienced 29-year-old congresswoman—the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States—has found herself in the crosshairs of Fox News, The Daily Caller, and dozens of alt-right conservative voices. She’s absolutely dangerous to them because she represents a wakeup call to America and a voice of change they desperately want to suppress.

Sundance Tries to Break Tide With ‘Mostly White Male' Critics, Says 63% of the press this year is from underrepresented groups; But is Positive discrimination still discrimination?

January 24, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

I attended this afternoon's Sundance Film Festival press conference, with exec director Keri Putnam, before introducing the panel, saying that organizers had noticed “a disturbing blind spot” in the festival's history of giving out press credentials: “Diversity isn’t about who is making the films,” Putnam said. “It’s about how they enter the world.” She said, adding that they were admitting “mostly white male critics.” Which, consequentially influenced the kind of films that were being championed by these 'mostly white male critics.

One of the stranger reactions to the whole viral video controversy, which arouse this past weekend next to the Lincoln Memorial, was that of Saturday Night Live comedy writer Sarah Beattie offering oral sex to anyone who was willing to punch a Covington High child in the face.

Bill Maher Called Out as NPC in Hollywood Billboards; Maher Responds By Calling Pranksters “Incels”

January 16, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

Over the weekend, left-bashing street artists turned a billboard of HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher into an NPC meme. The billboard was promoting the return of his show with a billboard depicting him as a seeker of the truth, however, conservative street artist group “The Faction” decided to remodel the ad, located at the corner of La Cienega Boulevard & West Holloway in West Hollywood, by  spray painting a gray, expressionless face over Maher’s and changing the image’s tagline from “The Whole Truth and Nothing But” to “The Whole Narrative and Nothing But.” They also changed “HBO” to “NPC.”

With “Green Book” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” winning, the Golden Globes sent a message to the moral crusaders on Sunday Night

January 9, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

You could hear the uproar that was to come. Even if you weren't logged into a social media platform, you just knew that what the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided to do yesterday was give a big middle finger to the outrage machine being generated online on a daily basis. What the HFPA's final decision on Sunday felt like was a towering statement that made you want to holler the kitschy Twisted Sister song: "We're not going to take it anymore."

Variety Critic: Obama’s 2018 Film Picks Much Like His Presidency, He Just Got With the Program

January 3, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

When Barack Obama posted his list of the best films of 2018 I wrote this on Facebook: "Consider me impressed by most of his list. I don't know if his backers just used an algorithm to select these films, or if these are genuinely his top picks but, suffice to say, "film twitter" is going gaga today over this list. Job well done."

Dennis Quaid writes and records song against Political Correctness: “Our whole culture has become intolerant”

Actor, now musician, Dennis Quaid and his backing band, The Sharks, have decided to record a song for the upcoming docudrama, “No Safe Spaces,” an anti-PC film about political correctness at college universities. The song “Out of the Box” describes how Americans have gotten too closed-minded, he told the New York Post. “It’s not just Hollywood. Our whole culture has become intolerant,” Quaid, 64, said. The lyrics in “Out of the Box” stress the importance of “being open to other points of view and not mindlessly giving yourself over to an ‘ism,’” he added.

HBO Presents ‘Brexit’ The Movie Starring Benedict Cumberbatch #NotTheOnion

December 16, 2018 Jordan Ruimy
farrage_cumberbatch.jpg

Dominic Cummings is known as the architect of Brexit. So it's then no surprise that a film would be made about his initiative to separate the U.K. from the EU. I presume the film will also have Nigel Farage, for me the face of Brexit. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Cummings in "Brexit," a co-production between HBO and UK’s Channel 4. A look at the just-released trailer and the feeling of an SNL-skit quickly sneaks up on you, not a good thing, but I'll give the film the benefit of the doubt, let's see how this turns out.

Sarah Silverman: Saying “Gay” in a Joke Is Like Saying “Colored People”

December 15, 2018 Jordan Ruimy
SarahSilverman11-640x480.jpg

Actress-comedian Sarah Silverman compared making gay jokes to describing a black person as “colored.” “I think I can find other ways to be funny. I mean, I used to say ‘gay’ all the time…’Oh, that’s so gay.’ Were from Boston, we’d go, ‘That’s what we say in Boston. I have gay friends. I just say gay,'” Sarah Silverman told TMZ. “And then I heard myself and I realized I was like the guy who said ‘What? I say colored…I have colored friends.’ And I realized it was stupid and I’m certainly creative enough to think of other words besides that, that don’t hurt people. But I fuck up all the time.”

“On The Basis of Sex" Is A Disservice to the Exceptional Life and Times of RBG

December 13, 2018 Jordan Ruimy

I had high expectations for Mimi Leder‘s "On The Basis of Sex", after all was being been dubbed as the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic. I can't think of more appropriate Oscar-bait. However, you hear that thud in the background? That's the sound of a well-meaning but mediocre film losing all steam and buzz after critics watch it.

In 2011 Donald Trump visited the set of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy capper “The Dark Knight Rises,” which was filming at Trump Tower. Christian Bale remembers that day very well, especially since Trump invited him up to his office and spoke to the Welsh actor as if he actually was Bruce Wayne.
