Disney is refusing to disclose box-office numbers for “Young Woman and the Sea,” which is set to hit Disney+ in two weeks’ time. They are using the Netflix playbook for awards eligibility with this one, but its Oscar odds seem to be nil to none. Just a weird strategy on the part of Disney.
Despite their refusal to show us numbers, Deadline’s industry estimates have “Young Woman and the Sea” nabbing a three-day opening of $500,000 this weekend (via Deadline). Producer Jerry Bruckheimer had mentioned that this was the highest-tested movie of his career which prompted Disney to decide on a last-minute theatrical launch.
The film stars Daisy Ridley as Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle, the Olympic swimmer who became the first woman to successfully swim the English Channel in 1926. It’s basically Nyad 2.0, starring Rey. It currently has a 63 on Metacritic. It’s just a really strange strategy on the part of Disney to suddenly switch this one up to theatrical, and, by the looks of it, not many people showed up to see it.
