Warners Bros has confirmed plans to remake 1992’s “The Bodyguard,” which starred Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. The studio has set “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” director Sam Wrench at the helm and he’ll be shooting a script by writer Jonathan A. Abrams (“Juror No. 2”).
Aside from directing ‘The Eras Tour,’ Wrench also helmed “Laufey’s A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl” and “A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter,” as well as concert docs for BTS, Billie Eilish and Lizzo.
The original “The Bodyguard,” directed by Mick Jackson, had a former Secret Service agent (Costner) hired to protect a famous singer (Houston). It grossed over $400M at the worldwide box office, but maybe more importantly, it spawned the bestselling movie soundtrack of all time, with most of the original songs from Houston.
I was not a fan of the film, which leaned heavily on melodrama, often sacrificing character for romance clichés. The chemistry between Costner and Houston felt forced and underdeveloped, but U.S. audiences fell hard for it, and now it’s getting the remake treatment.
