A Frederick Douglas biopic is in the works over at Netflix. Regina King, who helmed “One Night in Miami,” is set to direct the film which is said to be epic in scope.
The film will recount Douglas’ childhood, his plight with slavery, his escape and his newfound fame as a major literary writer. King is set to write the film which will take place in the 19th century.
As mentioned, King wrote and directed 2020’s “One Night in Miami,” which garnered good reviews and was selected to screen at the Venice Film Festival. The film nabbed three Oscar nominations, including Supporting Actor and Screenplay.
The film is being produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company. They signed their Netflix deal in the summer of 2018 and have been backing projects for the streaming giant ever since.
