Look out for this one.
Karim Aïnouz’s “Rosebushpruning,” his second English-language project, will begin shooting in the Spring of 2024.
The film was announced by The Match Factory and MUBI during Cannes and is set to star Kristen Stewart, Josh O’Connor, and Elle Fanning. Here is the official synopsis, via Production Weekly.
In the claustrophobic confines of a rural estate, a family struggles with their tangled web of hereditary diseases. Among them is Alessandro, a young man with epilepsy and paranoid tendencies. [..] Alessandro's obsessive nature takes a dark turn when a series of dreadful accidents and murders is set into motion. The chilling sequence begins with the intentional act of pushing their blind, religious mother into a ravine. This sinister act is followed by the elimination of Leone, the intellectually disabled brother. Throughout this macabre scheme, Alessandro grapples with his own desires, including an unsettling inclination towards incestuous impulses with his sister, Giulia.
Aïnouz is quite busy these days, He was in Cannes competition this past May with “Firebrand,” starring Alicia Vikander and Jude Law. That film was met with mixed reviews, but Cannes loves the guy.
Aïnouz is in the middle of shooting amother film. His “Motel Destino” has begun production in Brazil. The film is being described as an erotic thriller and stars Iago Xavier, Nataly Rocha and Fábio Assunção.
“Motel Destino” began filming in the Brazilian-Algerian filmmaker’s native region of Ceará on July 31. This is Aïnouz’s eighth feature, in 2019 he directed Un Certain Regard winner “The Invisible Life”.
I guess we can include Aïnouz’s film on our Cannes 2024 tracking list, which also includes Joshua Oppenheimer, Jacques Audiard, David Cronenberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Mike Leigh, Jia Zhang-ke, Lynne Ramsay, Audrey Diwan, Sean Baker, Steve McQueen, Jim Jarmusch, Terrence Malick, Andrea Arnold, Yorgos Lanthimos, Paola Sorrentino, Leos Carax, and Paul Verhoeven.
