Last week, we finally had the lineup for this year’s Cannes Film Festival revealed. We are still awaiting the 5 or 6 additions to complete the selection, hopefully this Thursday.
Tomorrow, we’re going to have the always-exciting Quinzaine des Realisateurs aka Director’s Fortnight announce their list of 2023 films — some of the titles rumored to be there include Bertrand Bonello’s “The Beast,” Sean Price Williams’ “The Sweet East,” Bertrand Mandico’s “Conann,” and Michel Gondry’s “Le Livre des Solutions.”
Announced today, take a look at the Cannes Critics’ Week lineup. If you’re interested in smaller filmmaking names, but some of the best up-and-coming directors out there, then this section is for you.
The Critics’ Week sidebar is composed of first and second-time filmmakers. Last year’s big breakout was Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun” and that film is even featured in this year’s official poster. It was maybe the most successful title to debut at Critics’ Week since Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu 2000 debut “Amores Perros.”
This 2023 edition of CW features seven films in competition, as well as an additional four films marked as “special screenings.” There will be highly-anticipated feature debuts from Amanda Nell (“Tiger Stripes”) and, Bong Joon-ho protégé, Jason Yu (“Jam”).
The opening night film has been selected to be “Ama Gloria,” directed by French filmmaker Marie Amachoukeli, who previously won Cannes’ Camera d’Or for 2014’s “Party Girl.”
Cannes Critics’ Week begins on May 17. You can check out the full lineup below:
