Director Susan Bier's “Bird Box,” has turned into a monster smash hit for Netflix. Nobody expected that to happen, but the Sandra Bullock thriller has been religiously memed ever since its release last month (not to mention breaking records for Netflix having been viewed 45M times in its first week). It has turned, by all accounts, into a cultural phenomenon. So much so, that Netflix had to go out of their way today and warn people not to celebrate their love of “Bird Box” in extreme ways.
Yes, that's right. Today, the streaming giant tweeted, “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
Bullock and her two kids are in blindfolds during most of the film, fighting an unknown entity, which has prompted fans to do what has been called the “Birdbox Challenge.” The typical “Bird Box Challenge” video has blindfolded fans walking around town and even driving their car blindfolded. How idiotic can people be? I won't start posting the videos circulating on YouTube, but suffice to say, idiots are very much alive and well in 2019 America.
