Earlier: The Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan starring “Maestro” started shooting last May and wrapped in early Fall. It’s most likely doing the fall festival circuit (Toronto, Venice), probably smack dab in the middle of the Telluride/Venice/Toronto storm.
The upcoming film is a biopic based on the life of Leonard Bernstein. It is said to span over 30 years, telling the story of the marriage between Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre.
Cooper has been working closely with the Bernstein estate over the past couple of years to nail the details of this biopic. All of this to say that “Maestro” test-screened last night in NYC.
Cooper, who directs “Maestro”, mentioned last year that production on the film was taxing:
“We started shooting in Massachusetts, then New York, then East Hampton, then we take a break, and then we go to Italy for three weeks, and then we end in London.” That makes “Maestro” quite the globe-trotting production.
The makeup, prosthetics, whatever you want to call them, are said to be really great. Cooper looks Bernstein’s age. Also, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are both producers for this one.
In fact, Spielberg was originally supposed to direct the film only to pass on the mantle to protegé, and “A Star is Born” director Cooper, who stepped in to direct. Netflix ended up landing the rights to the musical drama. As mentioned, a fall splash is expected.
