Bill Maher has addressed the backlash over his recent comments about Stan Lee's death. The Real Time HBO host was scorned by fans of the late Marvel icon after he wrote a blog post calling into question Lee's legacy and even going as far as blaming him for Donald Trump's election. Lee's company, POW! Entertainment, called Maher's comments "disgusting."

Stan Lee’s team at POW! Entertainment have written a scathing open letter in response to Bill Maher's comments over the weekend, in which the Real Time HBO host blamed Lee for inflicting comic book culture on America and even went as far as saying that Lee was responsible for electing Donald Trump.

Yes, the across-the-board worshiping of Stan Lee's death should never be condemned. Lee was, by all accounts, a good man who, in this last turn of the century, ended up being one of the most important and revolutionary figures for pop culture and the mainstream. Superhero movies are all the rage these days, and have been since "X-Men" was released in 2000. And so, what's resulted in these 18 years since that film's release is the corporate Marvel-ization of mainstream movies. Nostalgia took over, mass infantilization if you will; fanboy culture has risen.

Lee was the legendary writer who got his start in the comic book industry with Jack Kirby. They would end up creating the superheroes that now dominate American moviemaking and, really, just pop culture in general. Lee is responsible for co-creating Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor, Black Panther, the X-Men, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and many, many more.
