October 16, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Just because most of the big movies this year have had their theatrical releases delayed until 2021 doesn’t mean that Oscar season is canceled. With the return to cinemas seemingly a long way off for most, and with more and more studios pushing back their tentpole movies every day, we thought it would be poignant to look at some of the extremely interesting movies still to hit streaming giant Netflix in 2020, which will become one of the only sources of new films for what appears to be the foreseeable future.

Cannes 2020: France Bans All Festival Gatherings Until Mid-July ...

April 13, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Listen, I really want Cannes, still the greatest and most prestigious film festival in the world, to take place in June or July or whenever the Cannes committee’s dated plans are veering towards, but, let’s be realistic here, the chances are getting slimmer by the day that the festival will happen this year..

April 2, 2020 Theo Fisher

With your two weeks (maybe more) worth of groceries now packed safely in the fridge, you now have to keep yourself busy at home, since everything in the outside world has been canceled. What’s a social-distancing, self-isolator to do at such a unique time in our world’s history? How about relaxing and watching a comedy to make you forget about the chaos going on in the outside world? Given the current state of things, is there any more welcome feeling right now than having a good laugh? May we suggest watching these comedies (all of which are available on Netflix)?

‘Soul': Pixar's Latest Has Jamie Foxx's Jazz Musician Scrambling to Find Home [Trailer]

March 12, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

At one point in time, specifically from 1995 to 2010, Pixar could do absolutely no wrong, it seemed like they were releasing classic after classic, and seemed unbeatable in the animation game. What else would call a stretch which included "Finding Nemo,” “WALL-E,” “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” “Up!” “Monsters Inc,” and the first three “Toy Story” movies?

Christopher Nolan's Mysterious New Movie Said To Be Globe Spanning Sci-Fi About Time Continuum; ‘North By Northwest' Meets ‘Inception'?

April 6, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

There have been many rumors as to what Christopher Nolan’s next film, set to be released in 2020, would be about, with many rumors having been debunked already. People have been shooting these rumors left and right and, hoping one of them sticks, and yet, we still don’t what the damn thing is about. All we know is that the screenplay is so secretive that its star, Robert Pattinson, had to be locked up in a room to read the damn thing. He couldn’t bring a physical copy home.

Christopher Nolan's Mysterious New Movie Casts John David Washington; Described As ‘Massive, Innovative, Action blockbuster'

March 19, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

What do we know about Christopher Nolan’s upcoming new movie? Well, not much really. We know that it is set to be released in July of 2020, that the script has been written and production is slated to commence later this year and that, today, “BlackKklansman” star John David Washington was cast in the lead role. The last bit of news was confirmed by Variety’s Justin Kroll who also mentioned that “one insider described the pic as a massive, innovative, action blockbuster, which will again be shown in Imax.”

I just wrote this on Facebook:

I was a fan of BlackKklansman, but Washington, Denzel's son, didn't particularly strike me as being an out-of-this-world talent that merited a leading role in a Christopher Nolan movie. Then again, you don't really need to "act" in a Nolan movie as much as just be a part of the narrative gimmick that he sets up for his actors. Don't get me wrong, I do love many of his movies, but they are not what you might call "acting showcases.”

There aren’t many directors that, just by their name associated with a movie, can bring audiences into theaters. There’s Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Clint Eastwood, and, of course, Christopher Nolan.

Oscars 2020: The Contenders

March 3, 2019 Jordan Ruimy
2019-movies-slice-600x200.jpg

This looks like an atrociously bland year for Hollywood (in terms of Oscar contenders). Tarantino, Scorsese, Soderbergh and then what? Do people seriously think yet another version of "Little Women" (courtesy of Greta Gerwig) will turn out to be an artful surprise? A new film by Kasi Lemmons sounds interesting on paper. Maybe the Safdies can sneak into the race with their Adam Sandler heist picture Uncut Gems,” but they are a little too radical for the Academy’s tastes. Looks like another year where the best movies will be foreign and mostly come from Cannes and Venice (Bong Joon-ho, Almodovar, Dardenne, Larrain, Puiu, Kore-eda, Hansen-Løve). Fine by me. My top ten lists have become more foreign-oriented the last few years, the American studio system is all but dead with Netflix now in charge of mid-budget dramas.

President Trump Slams Spike Lee For Putting a “Racist Hit” On Him at the Oscars

February 25, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

These are truly fascinating times to live in. So much that has been parodied on SNL and The Onion, for years on end, has come full-circle and become reality these last few years, to the point where satire has taken a major hit. SNL is not that funny anymore because, quite frankly, we’re living in an SNL skit and with The Onion having been faced with major layoffs. not to mention filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, these satirically-based entities can't compete against today’s reality.
