Texas congressional candidate Dan Crenshaw was badly wounded in the eye during his third tour in Afghanistan as a Navy SEAL, he wears an eye-patch for that reason. Do I agree with “Saturday Night Live” comic Pete Davidson poking fun at the eye-patch in a skit that aired this past weekend? Of course not. We shouldn't make fun of any veteran's battle wounds. Davidson can say or do what he pleases, it's all about free speech as far as I'm concerned, something we badly need in comedy. However, I will say this, that doesn't mean Davidson's joke wasn't done in poor taste.
Davidson said during Saturday’s “Weekend Update” segment that Dan Crenshaw, whose photo was displayed, was “kinda cool” but that it's surprising that “he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hit man in a porno movie.” adding “I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war or whatever.”
Crenshaw replied in a tweet on Sunday, saying: “Good rule in life: I try hard not to offend; I try harder not to be offended. That being said, I hope @nbcsnl recognizes that vets don’t deserve to see their wounds used as punchlines for bad jokes.”Some of the best comedy I have seen was done in very poor taste, but Davidson's joke just wasn't that funny, it was bland and cheap. With all that being said, Davidson should probably not apologize, this is comedy after all, and Crenshaw seems to be in agreement with that.
