UPDATE: Renate Reinsve (“The Worst Person in the World”) has joined the cast of Mungiu’s next film (via IndieWire). It’s set to shoot in March. Here’s the synopsis, courtesy of Stan:
A Romanian family who’s moved to Norway and then ends up in this very complicated trial. There’s a system [that] investigates cases if there’s ever been physical abuse in the household between the parents or the kids. They go investigating the family for an incident, and it leads to this trial. It happened before the pandemic, and it became national news. There were a lot of religious communities that came to their side, and it’s really interesting and quite complicated.
UPDATE: More details have emerged about this one. It’s called “Fjord,” and shooting in the spring. What’s even more interesting is that it’s set in Norway, and not Romania (which is where most of Mungiu’s films have taken place).
“Fjord” tackles the relationship that develops between two neighboring families where one of the partners in each family has a nationality other than Norwegian. The families live in a small village in Norway and have children of the same age. When their views on society, values and child-rearing begin to vary, they must ask themselves complex questions about cultural differences, about the limits of privacy and tolerance, and about freedom and personal integrity.
EARLIER: Here’s some good news. Romanian Palme d’Or winner Cristian Mungiu is set to shoot his next film in 2025, and it’s going to star Sebastian Stan. No plot details were revealed.
Will it be Mungiu’s first English-language film? Not too sure about that. Stan was born in Romania, and has mentioned in the past his desire to go back to his roots, explicitly stating his desire to work with Mungiu. His wish has now been granted.
Stan is hot these days. He’s coming off being double-nominated at the Golden Globes for “A Different Man” and “The Apprentice.” He’s also “Bucky” in the MCU, and will take part in next year’s Marvel extravaganza “Thunderbolts.” In the above mentioned interview, there’s also mention of his starring in new films from Justin Kurzel and Christian Tafdrup.
Meanwhile, Mungiu, a world-class filmmaker, has directed six films so far, including “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,” “R.M.N.” “Beyond the Hills” and “Graduation.” It’s no stretch to state that this latest one will be one of our most anticipated of 2026.
