M Night Shyamalan’s “Knock at the Cabin” was supposed to open with a 20+ million opening this weekend, but early numbers are pointing towards that not happening, at all. It just made $1.5 million in previews on Thursday.
I thought it was Shyamalan’s ballsiest movie in ages, maybe not a “great” movie, but one that caught my attention from beginning to end. A lot of risk-taking in the filmmaking here. It’s a real shame they didn’t stick with the book’s ending though.
Jarin Blaschke‘s cinematography was quite grainy and distracting. It probably didn’t help Blaschke’s case that Shyamalan is said to have shot the film with 1990s lenses to give it an "old-school thriller" look. Not the wisest decision if you ask me. It’s a distracting look throughout the film.
Audiences aren’t as enthused by the film. The usually easy-to-please CinemaScore crowed have given it a C. Yikes. Probably because “Knock at the Cabin” is such a downer of a movie. On IMDB it has a tepid 6.3 score and 65% audience score on RT.
If I had to grade “Knock at the Cabin,” since I haven’t properly reviewed it, I’d probably give it a “B” or “B-” it’s definitely a step up from “Old” and “Glass.” As I mentioned earlier in the week, Shyamalan peaked with “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable” and hasn’t been able to hit that level of quality again.
