The Directors Guild of America has announced its five nominees for directing, and the notable snubs are Denis Villeneuve (“Dune: Part II”), Coralie Fargeat (“The Substance”) and John M. Chu (“Wicked”). The biggest surprise is James Mangold (“A Complete Unknown”) which almost nobody saw coming.
Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film:
Sean Baker (“Anora”)
Edward Berger (“Conclave”)
Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”)
Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Perez”)
James Mangold (“A Complete Unknown”)
Cue the folks complaining that it’s all men. I would have loved Fargeat to be nominated, but what can you do.
Today’s been a great day for “A Complete Unknown.” Between the SAG noms and now this, Mangold’s biopic is well on its way to to garnering a slew of Oscar noms.
I’m also wholly convinced that, in a year that’s had no Oscar frontrunner emerge out of the woodworks, it’s now most likely a four-way race for best picture between “Anora,” “Conclave,” “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Perez.”
