Here’s the good news — Lionsgate bombed 2024 only to kick off 2025 with already two #1 movies. Yet, Mel Gibson’s “Flight Risk,” which topped the box office this weekend with a $12.5M intake, doesn’t look it’ll be making much of a dent in the coming weeks. The budget on this one was $25M.
Forget about the miserable reviews from critics, 21 % on RT, but rather that C rating on CinemaScore sticks out like a sore thumb, ditto the 5.6/10 rating on IMDb. Audiences seem to genuinely dislike “Flight Risk.”
It doesn’t help that there’s barely been marketing on the film. Gibson didn’t do any sit down interviews, and instead decided to appear on three podcasts. The star of the film, Mar Wahlberg, has also been absent from the media rounds— not much press on his part either.
So, yes, “Flight Risk” is the de facto #1 movie this weekend, but might very well lose that spot next weekend with the release of the much-buzzed horror sci-fi “Companion.” It’s been a very slow start to 2025, and things probably won’t be picking up until February 14, that’s when Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” gets released.
