Athina Rachel Tsangari's “Harvest” was offered a slot in Un Certain Regard at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but instead, wisely, opted for Venice competition. It’s now set to hit three of the four major fall festivals (Venice, TIFF, NYFF).
Set in a remote English village where traditional ways of life are brutally disrupted by private interests, Harvtest is a haunting allegory about xenophobic anxiety and unchecked capitalism.
The cast includes Caleb Landry Jones, Harry Melling and Rosy McEwen. Sean Price Williams (“The Sweet East”) is DP. Match Factory, one of the film's backers, has released a trailer. The film still has no U.S. distribution.
Greek auteur Tsangari’s previous two efforts were “Chevalier” and “Attenberg,” which respectively premiered at Locarno and Venice, winning prizes at both fests. “Harvest” comes with certain expectations, the fact that it was selected for NYFF’s Main Slate is a very good sign.
