Will Smith is officially back. He’s finally added a project to his mostly empty post-slap schedule. The actor will be re-teaming with Sony on the sci-fi thriller “Resistor.” The film is based on Daniel Suarez’s bestselling novel “Influx.” The first draft of the script was written by Zak Olkewicz, with Eric Singer penning the latest draft.
Here’s the synopsis:
While plot details are under wraps, the 2014 novel is a sci-fi thriller that follows physicist Jon Grady and his team who have discovered a device that can reflect gravity — a triumph that will revolutionize the field of physics and change the future. But instead of acclaim, Grady’s lab is locked down by a covert organization known as the Bureau of Technology Control […] When Grady refuses to join the BTC, he’s thrown into a nightmarish high-tech prison housing other doomed rebel intellects.
They are seeing this “as a perfect star vehicle for Smith”. We should mention that, while this marks the first project Smith has signed onto since the slap, sources tell Deadline there is currently no director attached, though meetings are expected to happen in the coming weeks.
After the success of ‘Bad Boys 4,’ some doors are starting to reopen for Smith. He currently has no other post-Bad Boys project lined up, but his “I Am Legend” sequel is a real possibility to shoot next year, and he’s also in talks to potentially lead a new sci-fi series from “Westworld” and “Fallout” creators Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy.
