Earlier in the year, John Waters confirmed that Aubrey Plaza would star in his next film, “Liarmouth.” However, despite turning in the script, the project seems to be having some funding issues.
Waters is now telling IndieWire that no progress has been made on that front (“we don’t have the money yet”). Sadly, nobody wants to fund his film
I wrote the script, they liked it, Aubrey [Plaza] likes the script, wants to be in it, I want her to be in it, and every person said, “No, we don’t have a penny of the budget.” That is where it is today. Hopefully that will change. But the answer as of today? That’s it.
“Liarmouth,” based on Waters’ own novel, follows con artist Marsha Sprinkle, who is described as “a suitcase thief, scammer, and master of disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth―until one insane man makes her tell the truth.”
This could be Waters’ first film in almost 20 years, but adding Plaza to the mix only amps up our excitement further. His last filthy creation was 2004’s “A Dirty Shame.” Waters is the iconoclast filmmaker behind “Pink Flamingos,” “Polyester,” “Serial Mom,” and “Hairspray.” This sicko world needs a new John Waters movie and it should hopefully be coming soon.
