It was no doubt with great emotion that, on the day it was announced he’d be in Cannes competition for “Oh, Canada,” Paul Schrader shared an image of himself, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas with the caption “Together Again.”
The three legends of the “New Hollywood” movement, now in their eighties, will in fact be brought back together at Cannes next month. Coppola will be in competition with “Megalopolis,” Schrader is there to premiere “Oh, Canada” and Lucas will be receiving the honorary Palme d’Or. The Gods of cinema sometimes work in mysterious ways.
The image shared below is from 1985, when they premiered Schrader’s “Mishima” at Cannes, which Lucas and Coppola’s production companies backed. This would also be the last time Schrader was in Cannes competition, that is, until yesterday. “Oh, Canada” will be the first time Schrader competes for the Palme d’Or in almost 40 years.
Hopefully these three filmmakers will take advantage of this rare opportunity to reproduce the below photo next month.
