Justine Triet wowed critics with her Palme d’Or winning “Anatomy of A Fall.” It’s also been nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. It should have also been a contender for Best International Film, but we already know the story behind that snub.
What’s next for Triet? In an interview with french magazine L'OBs, Triet confirms she’s been offered to direct an adaptation of Daniel Clowes' graphic novel “Monica," with Cate Blanchett in the title role.
In the interview, Triet admits she "didn't follow through, at least not yet” on the offer. Would she accept this? Triet tends to write her own screenplays. Maybe she can polish this one up with her own unique stamp on the material. Blanchett starring is certainly a major lure.
In Clowes’ 2023 novel, which was critically acclaimed, the author blended several different genres into one story, separating them by chapter. “Monica” chronicles the journey of a girl who is in search of her mother and trying to uncover her mysterious past.
Clowes has had three of his graphic novels adapted to the screen, so far — “Wilson,” “Art School Confidential,” and, most successfully, 2001’s “Ghost World,” which was directed by Terry Zwigoff.
Triet isn’t a one-trick pony either. Her previous films, before ‘Anatomy,’ include two works well worth seeking out: 2016’s “Victoria” and 2019’s “Sibyl.” Both of those films are bound to find reappraisal in the States after the success of ‘Anatomy.’
