Jon M. Chu is collecting musicals like infinity stones.
Chu, who broke big with “Crazy Rich Asians,” has already directed “In The Heights,” and “Wicked,” two lavishly created movie musicals. He’s not done either. His next one might be even more ambitious, and is backed by considerable music writing talent.
In a recent interview with The Irish News, Tim Rice confirmed that he and Andrew Lloyd Webber are writing new songs for Chu’s next project, an adaptation of the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” They are the duo behind “Evita,” “jesus Christ Superstar,” and the original ‘Technicolor Dreamcoat.’
Meanwhile, Chu has himself given an update on this project. He tells Deadline that the script is still being written, and that his current focus is on ‘Wicked,’ which will have its final chapter released in November 2025. Regardless, this could very well be his next film.
None other than Britney Spears has teased her involvement in Chu’s adaptation of ‘Technicolor Dreamcoat.’ When asked, Chu refused to confirm or deny that she will be a part of the film.
Coincidentally, or not, Chu also has a Britney Spears biopic still in the early stages of development. According to the filmmaker, a writer has not yet been hired, and no script has been written. However, the project’s vision is already taking shape — Chu wants to portray Spears as a young and successful woman who people “thought they could own.”
As mentioned, Chu’s next film is the already-shot “Wicked: For Good.” He is best known as the director of 2018’s “Crazy Rich Asians.” His other credits include “Now You See Me 2,” “In the Heights,” “Jem and the Holograms” and “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.”
