Tyler Nilson & Michael Schwartz (“The Peanut Butter Falcon”) are developing a “Treasure Island” remake for Disney. They describe it as “an Australian surfer version” of the classic adventure novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, published in 1883.
There have been at least 10 English-language film adaptations, as well as at least 10 foreign language feature films, based on Stevenson’s iconic novel. I thought we were done remaking this story. Hollywood is creatively bankrupt.
Nilson & Schwartz are coming off their well-reviewed 2019 indie “Peanut Butter Falcon,” starring Dakota Johnson, Shia LaBeouf and Zack Gottsagen. They’ve followed that one up with “Los Frikis,” a ‘90s-set Cuban movie about HIV and punk rockers, hitting theaters on Christmas Day.
With that said, “Treasure Island” is still in the early stages of development. Nilson & Schwartz’s next project will actually be an English-Language remake of 2020’s “Riders of Justice,” which starred Mads Mikkelson. Anders Thomas Jensen and Nikolaj Arcel, who co-wrote the original, will write the English-language version.
