So, what I reported on yesterday has been confirmed, via Deadline. This is quite the eccentric team-up, mixing arthouse cinema with comic book filmmaking, and the result is one hell of an unusually assembled project. I’m reminded of that time, back in 2002, when it was announced that Ang Lee, coming off “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” would be directing Marvel’s “Hulk.”
Regardless, yes, Luca Guadagnino will be joining the DCU with “Sgt. Rock” and Daniel Craig is set to join in him the titular lead role. Guadagnino’s “Challengers” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes has penned the screenplay. Not just that, but Deadline’s saying that it’s set to be Guadagnino’s next film.
Hollywood has been trying to make a “Sgt. Rock” movie for many decades now. In the ‘80s, producer Joel Silver wanted Arnold Schwarzenegger to star. Then, in the aughts, Quentin Tarantino was offered to direct his own version, with David Webb scripting. Here’s Tarantino describing it…
There’s a really good script that David Webb Peoples wrote for Sgt. Rock’ that I still think about doing that from time to time […] I don’t think I will, but I think it’s a really magnificent script and I would do a good job with
Guadagnino is coming off his acclaimed “Queer” and recently wrapped “After the Hunt,” starring Julia Roberts. I still believe he’ll be shooting “Separate Rooms,” starring Josh O’Connor and Lea Seydoux, before “Sgt. Rock” — script and casting is ready on that one. Guadagnino’s ‘American Psycho’ probably won’t go into production until 2026.
