Another day, another remake. According to THR, Javier Bardem is set to star in “Cape Fear,” the series remake of the classic 1962 and 1991 films.
“Cape Fear,” which was originally based on the novel, “The Executioners,” tells the story of a lawyer who finds himself terrorized by notorious killer, Max Cady, as he gets out of prison. Martin Scorsese directed the 1991 version, which was famously spoofed by The Simpsons.
Based on reporting, it does sound as though Bardem will be playing Cady, which is a role that was originally rendered iconic by Robert Mitchum (1962) and Robert De Niro (1991). Bardem did a masterful job playing the villain in “No Country For Old Men,” and there’s no doubt in my mind that he’ll knock this one out of the ballpark as well.
In “Cape Fear,” a storm is coming for happily married attorneys Amanda and Steve Bowden when Max Cady (Bardem), a notorious killer from their past, gets out of prison. This new interpretation is described as a tense, Hitchcockian thriller but also examines America’s obsession with true crime. No other casting has been announced for who will play the Bowdens.
“Cape Fear” is showrun by Nick Antosca who is probably best known for creating true crime dramas “A Friend of the Family” and “The Act.” It should also be noted that the 10-episode series is being produced by Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.
