At this point, Lucasfilm is playing with fire. There are at least nine Star Wars movie projects currently in development, and at least two of them revolve around Daisy Ridley’s Rey.
A new report from THR calls “Rey” Lucasfilm’s “coveted weapon” for the future of Star Wars. Is this a joke? Have they not learned, from the last trilogy, that the fanbase does not care about Rey? Kathleen Kennedy is running the Star Wars ship into the ground.
Simon Kinberg’s recently announced Star Wars trilogy, rumored to be Episodes X, XI, XII, will indeed revolve around Ridley’s character; the scavenger-turned-Jedi is also said to lead director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s solo project. However, THR says that other projects currently in development will be using Rey well.
She is the “key to the franchise’s next turn,” one source tells THR. “[Rey] is the most valuable cinematic asset, in some ways maybe the only one, Star Wars has right now.”
Rey making a comeback in “several” Star Wars movies is a bold move on the part of Kennedy, considering half the fandom is still recovering from the last trilogy. There are so many character that can be used in the SW universe, but they’ve settled with Rey? This could backfire on them.
Not including Kinberg and Obaid-Chinoy’s projects, there are at least seven other ‘Star Wars’ movies currently in development over at Lucasfilm, from directors James Mangold, Dave Filoni, Donald Glover, Taika Waititi, Rian Johnson Shawn Levy and Patty Jenkins.
