Martin Scorsese was supposed to shoot this documentary in the summer, but things were delayed. I thought it might meet the same fate as his recently “postponed” Sinatra and Jesus movies, but that is clearly not the case.
Italian media is reporting that Scorsese has started production on his untitled ancient shipwrecks doc. The film will tackle his ancestral roots in Sicily, where his grandparents were born, exploring the “scientific tools including DNA analysis on artifacts recovered from ancient shipwreck sites, to reconstruct stories of ships, sailors, cargoes, and maritime trade in the ancient world.”
Scorsese will take the weekend off and be in Turin on October 7 to pick up an award from the Italian Cinema Museum and give a masterclass. Willem Dafoe will be joining him. There’s also been this persistent rumor that Leonardo DiCaprio will be on hand to give Scorsese the award.
