I don’t know why Matthew Vaughn, who has been everywhere lately, needs to weigh in on the MCU, but sure, why not? He’s got “Argylle,” a spy movie, coming out next week and hasn’t really been involved in the superhero genre since ‘X-Men: First Class.”
However, Vaughn is telling us all to calm down about “superhero fatigue” because a messianic film is about to come and change the game. He was a guest on the BroBible’s Post Credit podcast and, when asked about Marvel’s recent troubles, says the MCU will be “saved” by “Deadpool 3,” which, apparently, he’s seen some of:
The few snippets that I know about ‘Deadpool vs. Wolverine’ — or ‘Wolverine vs. Deadpool,’ I’m sure that argument between Ryan and Hugh is happening as we speak — are unbelievable. That’s going to be the jolt… the Marvel universe is about to have a jolt of them, and it’s going to bring that body back to life… I think Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are about to save the whole Marvel universe.
This is the total opposite of what he said just a few months ago. Last October, Vaughn told ScreenRant that studios needed to take “time off” from the superhero genre, adding “there’s been so many bad superhero movies” that “like the Western, people are just getting very bored of them.”
What changed? He saw ”snippets” of “Deadpool 3”? Take his comments with a grain of salt. There’s been buzz that Vaughn is interested in coming back to make more ‘X-Men’ movies for Marvel and these comments are maybe just his way of sneaking into the director’s chair for that one.
Don’t get me wrong, based on the buzz, I have no doubt that “Deadpool 3” will be a box office success, and its upcoming trailer premiere at the Super Bowl will enhance people’s excitement, but it takes more than just one movie to revive the superhero genre.
The first two ‘Deadpool’ movies each grossed around $780 million worldwide. The franchise has only grown in popularity on home media and the notion that this third one could cross the billion dollar mark is not a stretch — it’s also set to become the first R-rated instalment of the MCU.
