On Thursday, I emailed around to try and figure out what was going on with Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest.” It’s been highly anticipated for a few years now, his first since 2013’s “Under the Skin.”
According to a few sources, “The Zone of Interest” seems to be ready to go. The film screened for A24’s top brass during the last week of February. That is a very good indicator that it might in fact be going to Cannes.
Glazer’s 18 month post-production process has been very slow and meticulous. let’s remember, there was a 24-month timeframe between the 2011 shoot of “Under the Skin” and its 2013 world premiere.
The upcoming holocaust drama might be in Polish and German. This would be the filmmaker’s first non-English film. The parents in “The Zone of Interest” will be played by award-winning actors Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann) and Christian Friedel (Amour Fou).
Lukasz Zal (“Cold War”, “Ida”) is credited as the DP here. If it does indeed premiere at Cannes then it would be the first time Glazer has one of his films appear in competition.
It might also be one of the few A24’s to premiere there. Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” and Sean Durkin’s “The Iron Claw” don’t seem to be ready. Maybe Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw the TV Glow” could appear in a sidebar section, like Director’s Fortnight.
I’ll have some new, and maybe final, Cannes predictions posted during the first week of April. The lineup is shaping up quite nicely.
