I’m a fan of J.C. Chandor’s Netflix-produced “Triple Frontier,” released in 2019. In my review of the film I wrote:
Triple Frontier” has Chandor continuing to show his talents for expertly choreographed, hold-your-breath action sequences, just as he did in his last two movies […] It's an epic and visceral adventure that’s the kind of action movie that feels like it is part of a bygone Hollywood era, one in which smartly-delivered action spectacles used to be the norm.
Rumor has it that Netflix actually lost quite a bit of money on ‘Frontier,’ which starred Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Pedro Pascal, and Charlie Hunnam. It cost upwards of $115 million to produce, critics were rather split on it and, apparently, it turned out to be a viewership bust for the streaming giant.
However, it would appear the streamer is in the process of developing a sequel. Speaking to The Mary Sue, Hunnam revealed that he is working with Netflix on a sequel, but that it’s in the very early stages of development.
Of course, this “Triple Frontier” sequel is not a guarantee as Hunnam says it’s still in its infancy. There’s also the question of whether Chandor would want to return as the director of this follow-up.
Chandor is, was, in my view, a potentially major U.S. filmmaker in the making. His first three films were “Margin Call,” “All is Lost” and “A Most Violent Year” — all critically acclaimed. Then he made “Triple Frontier,” which split critics and his signing up to the 2024 Marvel movie, “Kraven the Hunter,” no doubt confused many.
Why has Chandor decided to hop on-board the Marvel train? Who knows. Maybe he wants the paycheck to fund his next more serious mid-budget effort.
Regardless, we’ll be keeping an eye out for the “Triple Frontier” sequel. If you haven’t seen the film yet then you might as well give it a shot — it’s currently streaming on Netflix. It plays like a spiritual successor to “Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” showing you what “gold does to men’s souls.”
