Now, this is great casting. We have our first look at Willem Dafoe as a “crazy vampire hunter” in Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu.” (12.25.23) The film reunites Dafoe with his “The Lighthouse” and “The Northman” director for their third collaboration together.
The scene in question, which involved a tomb surrounded by flames, looks apocalyptic. “That sequence, aside from having real flames, had 2,000 real rats," Eggers tells EW.
Dafoe plays a vampire hunter named Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz. While the character from Murnau's original film isn’t as featured as the other main characters, Eggers says he “amped up” Von Franz to be a "crazy vampire hunter" — a character, he says, "I've always loved and related to."
It should be stated that, in my books, Dafoe gave the best performance of the iconic Nosferatu in 2000’s “Shadow of the Vampire,” he should have won the Oscar for his incredible work in that film.
