A Variety interview with “The Marvels” director Nia DaCosta has the MCU filmmaker attacking haters of her superhero movie.
It’s no secret that Marvel fanboys are, shall we say, a passionate bunch. They loudly voiced their displeasure at “The Marvels,” some do it in fairly subtle ways, whilst others have absolutely no restraint or filter.
DaCosta shared her thoughts about critics who accused her film, and Marvel, for — her words, not mine — “going woke.” She admits that there’s “civilized critique” and then there’s racists, homophobes, virulent creatures …
There are pockets that are really virulent and violent and racist — and sexist and homophobic and all those awful things. And I choose the side of the light. That’s the part of fandom I’m most attracted to.
Popular YouTuber, Ryan Kinel, reacted to DaCosta’s comments saying, “Those fans, in large part, it’s people that have legitimate criticisms of where the MCU has been going for the past several years. That’s what we’ve seen. That is exactly what they do time after time.”
He added, “So you can continue to virtue signal people that are critical of your movie with those buzzwords that mean nothing anymore in the grand scheme of things, but the reality is people can see right through this.”
“The Marvels” bombed at the box-office over the weekend, so it wasn’t just “racists” who didn’t want to support this movie. The film only grossed $46.1 million in its opening weekend domestically and its looking like a sure thing for a drop of, at least, 60% next weekend.
Reviews weren’t any better. “The Marvels” had a lacklustre B CinemaScore grade and a tepid 50 MetaScore with critics — it’s now the worst reviewed MCU movie ever on Metacritic. So, let’s not pretend this isn’t a bad movie.
