A biopic about the late legendary French singer Edith Piaf is in the works at Warner Bros. The bigger story is the announcement that the film will use AI to recreate her voice and image.
Warners is teaming up with Piaf’s estate for “Edith,” a 90-minute film set in Paris and New York, taking place between the ‘20s and ‘60s. The film will be narrated by the AI-generated voice of Piaf’s. The studio teased us this morning with the first image of this strange project — which can be seen above.
“Animation will provide a modern take on her story, while the inclusion of archival footage, stage and TV performances, personal footage and TV interviews will provide audiences with an authentic look at the significant moments of Piaf’s life,” the music company said in announcing the project.
Warners will be using AI technology, which is currently being trained to use “hundreds of Piaf’s voice clips and images,” some of which are over 80 years old. The goal is to find “distinct voice and image” to bring out “authenticity” to the film.
