Taika Waititi just keeps piling up these projects. He has many in development, including a “Star Wars” movie that he’s currently writing.
However, one movie he will not be directing is “Thor 5.” In an interview with Business Insider, Waititi confirms that, despite directing the last two ‘Thor’ movies, including the much-maligned ‘Love and Thunder,’ he has moved on from the franchise.
Waititi directed the best ‘Thor’ movie, 2017’s ‘Ragnarok,’ but the failure of ‘Love and Thunder’ seems to have broken up his relationship with Marvel. He says he has no hard feelings …
I would never feel like they are cheating on me. We're in an open relationship, and it's like if they want to see other people, I'm happy for that. I'd still get back into bed with them one day.
So, what’s next for Waititi? There’s the already- mentioned “Star Wars” movie, which seems to still be a few years away. Not to mention a live-action remake of “Flash Gordon“ and his adaptation of anime classic “Akira.”
However, Waititi tells Business Insider that another sci-fi project seems to be booked as his next film, set to shoot in early 2024. Waititi is to direct a feature adaptation of “Klara & The Sun,” a sci-fi novel from Kazuo Ishiguro (“Never Let Me Go“).
Dahvi Waller (“Mrs. America“) penned the original draft of the script, with Waititi, potentially, rewriting some, or all of it. Below is the novel’s official synopsis via Penguin Random House:
“Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her.”
Ishiguro and Waititi don’t quite gel in my books. On paper, it’s one of the weirder director/author partnerships in recent years. We’ll see how it turns out.
