I’ll be covering the Sundance Film Festival in just under two weeks time. Today, the Park City fest announced new additions to its lineup. Leading the charge is John Carney’s musical “Flora and Son.”
Carney is the filmmaker behind “Once” and “Sing Street,” both of which garnered critical acclaim upon release. His last one, the semi-watchable “Begin Again,” fared less well with critics.
Other notable additions for this year’s Sundance Film Festival: Peter Nicks’ doc, “Stephen Curry: Underrated,” Madeleine Gavin’s “Beyond Utopia,” Savanah Leaf’s “Earth Mama,” and Celine Song’s “Past Lives.” These are said to complete the program, there will be no further titled added.
I’m not exactly sure how interested in Sundance our readers are, it’s mostly a festival that focuses on discovery, but what I’m circling right now are new films from Nicole Holofcener (“You Hurt My Feelings”), Ira Sachs (“Passages”), Sebastian Silva (“Rotting in the Sun”), Brandon Cronenberg (“Infinity Pool”), William Oldroyd (“Eileen”), John Carney (“Flora and Son”) and Cory Finley (“Landscape of Invisible Hand”).
However, I doubt these will be the best of the fest. More likely, a few new up and coming directors will be discovered, just like every other edition of Sundance. That’s why I keep going back for more. It’s the most unpredictable and exciting Film Festival in the US.
The 2023 Festival will take place January 19–29 in person in Park City, Salt Lake City. A selection of films will be available online across the United States from January 24–29. That selection will include all competition films, but not films designated as premieres.
