On Sunday I wrote about Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s son, Cooper Hoffman, being cast in the new, ultra-secretive Paul Thomas Anderson movie. Well now we have confirmation that not only is Cooper in the film, but he will play the leading role, a high school student who is also a child actor.
Alana Haim, Bradley Cooper, and Bennie Safdie will also co-star in the film which currently has the working title “Soggy Bottom” and has been dubbed as a 1970s-set coming-of-age story. As mentioned, Hoffman plays a child actor at the center of multiple storylines set in California’s San Fernando Valley.
The younger Hoffman and Haim are both making their respective acting debuts.
I wrote on Sunday:
“The casting of Cooper is quite touching when you come to realize that his father and PTA had a legendary four-film director-actor partnership (“Magnolia,” “Boogie Nights,” “Punch-Drunk Love,” and “The Master.”) Hoffman Jr. is not a trained actor, he doesn’t even have an IMDB page to his name, and we don’t really know if he has landed a prominent role in “Soggy Bottom,” but this is the kind of casting that can’t help but put a smile on any movie fan’s face.”
