Here’s another haunted house movie for you. Then again, this being the era of low-budget indie horror, there’s always the off-chance that something creative can come out of this tiresome genre (check out next month’s “Relic” as proof). With all that being said, “You Should Have Left” seems to be trying for something relatively fresh and new with the material at hand. My expectations are tame, but hopeful.
Following a family that moves into a new creepy mansion, which has a few peculiarities, including the fact that the house is bigger indoors than the outside contours let on. Also, what’s the deal with polaroids being taken while this family tries to peacefully sleep?
It helps that Kevin Bacon and Amanda Seyfried, two awesome actors, are part of this Blumehouse creep-fest, ditto screenwriter David Koepp (“Jurassic Park,” “Carlito’s Way,” “Spider-Man” “Mission Impossible,” “Panic Room”) who also helms directing duties. The bad news is that Koepp directed the 2015 Johnny Depp bomb-for-the-ages “Mortdecai” the good news is that his other films as director weren’t as bad (“Premium Rush,” “Stir of Echoes,” “Secret Window,” “Ghost Town”).
This is just the latest film to skip theaters and head straight to VOD since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down began. “You Should Have Left” is set to arrive on VOD on June 19.
