As is tradition with upcoming Christopher Nolan films, a trailer is typically unveiled a full year before the release date.
So, it’s no surprise to hear that a trailer, or probably more like a teaser, for Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is expected to debut in front of “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” which releases on July 2 — both films are being distributed by Universal.
“The Odyssey” reportedly has a budget of around $250 million and will utilize brand-new, state-of-the-art IMAX cameras, with cinematography by Nolan’s go-to DP, Hoyte Van Hoytema.
Nolan is still filming “The Odyssey,” and was last seen on set in Italy. Production is expected to continue through June. Principal photography began on February 25, 2025, with a cast that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth, and Samantha Morton.
“The Odyssey” is as epic as it gets. An adaptation of this massive poem, composed by Homer around the 8th century BCE, is almost guaranteed to result in a film exceeding three hours in length. It’s also shaping up to be the biggest risk of Nolan’s career, as the source material has long been considered “unfilmable,” unfit for the screen — and I still believe that to be the case. Good luck, Chris.
Homer’s ancient Greek epic tells the story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. If Nolan remains faithful to the source, we can expect encounters with Cyclopes, Sirens, and witch-goddesses. Themes of heroism, loyalty, betrayal, and spirituality — all central to Homer’s work — will no doubt find their way into the screenplay.
“The Odyssey” is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026.
