"RRR" is being re-released in theaters in the U.S. this coming Friday, March 3.
RRR”? It’s quite entertaining; the action is deliriously over the top, the story very silly, but its 3-hour runtime barely has any dull stretches. It’s what you might call a guilty pleasure, but one that’s incredibly well-directed. Nothing more, nothing less.
What success a story this film has become. “RRR” has become a sensation in the US, with incredible numbers on Netflix and critical backing to boot.
Why India would decide on the unknown “Last Film Show” as their International Film selection is mind-boggling. However, as far as Oscar voters go, it wasn’t realistic to think that they were willing to watch a 3-hour hyperkinetic Indian action musical about the evils of British colonialism.
However, much like James Cameron, who loved the film so much he’s seen it a few times, Steven Spielberg is a major fan of SS Rajamouli’s “RRR.” In a conversation with Rajamouli, Spielberg praised the Indian blockbuster as “eye candy.”
There are a lot of “RRR” fans in the industry; it was a contender to nab a Best Picture nomination that alas didn’t materialize. Some of the known filmmakers who have raves about the film include Spielberg, Cameron, Adam McKay, James Gunn, Scott Derrickson, Daniel Kwan, The Russos, JJ Abrams, Edgar Wright. All mainstream action directors.
Rajamouli turned some heads a few months ago when his, um, endearing Sight and Sound list leaked online. In it he listed “Kung Fu Panda,” “Aladdin,” “The Lion King” “Apocalypto” and “Forrest Gump” as his all-time favorites.
