When it comes to dumb decisions, this might just take the cake for worst movie title of the year.
According to an anonymous source, "Focus groups [have] shown that people [at test screenings] didn't realize ["The Girl With the Spider's Web"] was connected to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." Sony seems to think that Claire Foy‘s punk haircut and dragon tattoo were not enough to communicate to fans that the upcoming "The Girl in the Spider’s Web" is connected to the same popular book series that "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" stemmed from. So they've decided to change their upcoming "The Girl in the Spider’s Web" to "The Girl in the Spider’s Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story." Again, this is not an Onion story.
Yes, Claire Foy is replacing Rooney Mara as the lead, but they basically have the same look and the titles both start with "The Girl ..." Also, fans of the Stieg Larsson novels, and there are millions of them, are the attracted buyer, and they're not stupid — they know the connection. Unless Sony thought that mainstream audiences would be confusing it as a sequel to "The Girl on the Train," this decision is pure and simply idiotic and clearly inspired by "Solo: A Star Wars Story."
"The Girl in the Spider’s Web: A Dragon Tattoo Story" opens in theaters on November 9, 2018.
