There was a report last July that “cancelled” actor Armie Hammer, who's now working at a hotel resort in the Cayman Islands, reportedly specialized in selling timeshares.
“A source [told] Variety that Hammer … [is] totally broke, and is trying to fill the days and earn money to support his family.”
In the blink of an eye, Hammer went from being Hollywood’s hottest new actor to working in a cubicle. You have to feel bad for the guy, whatever his sins were, he’s trying to make an honest living here, providing for his family and keeping himself busy.
Now, remember when Kevin Spacey was embroiled in numerous #MeToo allegations and decided it was the right time to come out as gay? Hammer has more or less done the same thing by blaming the carnivorous BDSM he was accused of on being sexually abused at 13 and attempting suicide.
Not that he’s not telling the truth here, he probably is, but it’s a way for him to deflect his current cancellation. Call it Hammer’s redemption story, the obligatory "poor me, pity me, I've had a difficult life" PR interview from a celebrity trying to make a comeback. And, know what? Maybe Hammer will get his wish.
In an interview with Air Mail, Hammer says that he was sexually abused by a youth pastor when he was 13, which “set a dangerous precedent in my life.”
Hammer also spoke about a suicide attempt he made at the time. “I just walked out into the ocean and swam out as far as I could and hoped that either I drowned, or was hit by a boat, or eaten by a shark.”
As mentioned, Hammer’s downfall started after accusations of BDSM and cannibalistic fetishes were revealed on social media. A user named Effie even accused Hammer of rape. They supposedly had set a ”safe word” before the BDSM commenced, but she never used it.
A major twist in this story is that noted feminist attorney Gloria Allred fired Effie once she wouldn’t sign a declaration putting her at risk perjury for her accusations. Why didn’t she? It was a major PR disaster for the accuser.
At least this article does a good enough job of exposing Effie’s inconsistencies and the wife’s role in the smear campaign. It may well be that Effie, with her inconsistencies, is exaggerating certain parts of the story, but the text messages are pretty damning.
Armie Hammer:
“No one will hire me. No one will insure me. I can’t get bonded for a project—nothing. And no one will touch me because if they hire me, then they are the people who support abusers. And then they’re liable to get canceled themselves because this fire that is burning itself through town—when they throw someone like me on the fire to protect themselves, what they don’t realize is happening is all they’re doing is making the fire bigger. And that fire is now out of control and it’s going to burn everyone. And they’re just continually throwing people on it as sacrifices to protect themselves.”
Luca Guadagnino took inspiration from Hammer’s misdeeds and made the cannibal romance “Bones and All” last year. Guadagnino has also mentioned that he wants to make a sequel to “Call Me By Your Name” with Hammer and Timothee Chalamet — maybe it’ll happen now.
