My inbox had a few emails this morning from French readers. They’re pointing me to a paywalled article from France.
According to Le Film Français, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is expected to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. What?! Two months before it even gets released?
The other films they mention set to premiere at Cannes are James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla.” Those are huge gets if this intel is true.
Back to “Oppenheimer,” Nolan is coming off the pandemic-released “Tenet,” which disappointed at the box-office, so maybe he wants a big splash for his latest one. Compared to his other films, “Oppenheimer” would not necessarily suffer from major spoilers.
The article doesn’t mention if the film would play in or out of competition. I would presume it’s the latter.
Nolan hasn’t premiered any of his movies at Cannes, but he did show up a few years ago to screen his remastered version of Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
