While we await Guillermo del Toro’s next project, supposedly, a Netflix-produced Frankenstein adaptation starring Oscar Isaac, the writer-director is already working on his next stop-motion animated movie.
Del Toro is telling The Telegraph that he will adapt Kazuo Ishiguro’s “The Buried Giant” into a stop-motion project.
The next stop-motion film I’m making is an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s ‘The Buried Giant,’ which I’m currently co-writing with Dennis Kelly, and we start the design process in two months,” said del Toro. “I’m shooting a live-action feature first. But in the meantime, we’re developing a look-book, and in about two years if everything goes well, we’ll start production.
The plot sounds more meditative and less kid-centric than “Pinocchio,” this past year’s Oscar-nominated del Toro film. “The Buried Giant” won the Nobel Prize in 2015:
The plot covers the journey of Axl and Beatrice, a couple who set off on a journey to find their son, who they have not seen for some time, and actually do not remember very well. As the story moves along with their journey, we discover that there are in fact a lot of things that Axl and Beatrice, and other characters they meet, do not remember.
This could be another Netflix film since the streaming giant struck an overall deal with Del Toro back in August 2020. In recent weeks, the filmmaker has teased one of his upcoming projects will be a monster movie (Frankenstein) and another animated movie (The Buried Giant).
In fact, Del Toro has been a very busy man these last few years, he’s not stopping creatively in any way shape or form. The Oscar-winning filmmaker is known for career highlights such as “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “The Devil’s Backbone” and “The Shape of Water.”
