They’re back. Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, the 21st-century Godards of fart and dildo jokes, are working on a new film.
The Daniels, as they are referred to, directed 2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to Oscar glory. The film won seven statuettes, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor. Their follow-up was inevitably going to come with hefty expectations.
The filmmaking duo are now working on a mysterious new project — Universal recently pulled the upcoming film from their 2026 release calendar to make room for Spielberg’s UFO movie. No details have been revealed about the project, though Universal seems to suggest it’ll have a bigger scope, and budget, than their previous films.
Regardless, I’m hearing cameras are rolling this summer in Orange & Ventura, California. It’s not impossible to believe that it could still be released next year, but they seem to have been taking their time on this one — consistently refining the script these last few years.
Suffice it to say, EEAAO was more than just a movie. It was a meme. A big, giant, fat meme that, according to its fans, had lots of heart: The hot dog fingers! Racacooine! That rock with the jiggly eye! The Bagel! Short Round! Kwan admitted he wrote the film as an attempt to recognize and understand his previously undiagnosed ADHD.
Some readers completely abide by EEAAO, I get it, and at least the film was striving for total and utter originality. Their other works were also connected to the same wheelhouse, including “Swiss Army Man,” and Scheinert’s underrated solo outing, “The Death of Dick Long.”
