Disney’s “Snow White” had a steep hill to climb to convince critics and audiences that it wasn't a trainwreck. The narrative had already been glued in that this was going to be a misbegotten live-action remake.
The review embargo has now lifted on “Snow White,” it currently sits at 45% on Rotten Tomatoes. Memo to Disney, just take it. It could have been a lot worse. Hell, Variety, Deadline and THR’s reviews are positive — just take it.
Honestly, scrolling through some of these reviews, and you get a certainconsensus; Rachel Zegler is good, the CGI Dwarves are divisive, and Gal Gadot is terrible. There, I saved you $20 bucks on a movie ticket.
Most of the media’s attention has been on the culture wars that have plagued this live-action remake, along with Zegler and Gadot’s Israel-Palestine disagreements. In reality, and without the controversy, was this ever going to turn out to be a good film?
What was the last good Disney live-action remake? Jon Favreau’s “The Jungle Book,” released in 2016?
It’s not just “Snow White.” Disney is prepping live-action remakes for “Lilo & Stitch,” “The Princess and The Frog” and “Hercules”. (via The DisInsider), and that's not even counting the stuff they have in early development, such as “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” “Aristocats,” “The Sword in the Stone,” “Bambi” and “Robin Hood.”
With “Snow White” projected to earn $45M-$50M this weekend, against a $270M+ budget, will Disney finally pull back on these live-action remakes, or will the onslaught continue on, for years to come?
