I don’t need to remind you that early social media reactions shouldn’t be taken as gospel. With that said, Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man” is off to a good start. I don’t see many, if any, critics chiming in, but I really hope this one is good. You can read the reactions below.
“Wolf Man” is said to lean hard on the body-horror aspect of the story, tackling the slow process of Christopher Abbott’s character turning into the monster. The film, which stars Julia Garner, Christopher Abbott, Sam Jaeger and Matilda Firth, has been described by Whannell as a “straight up horror movie.”
Back in March, Universal announced that “Wolf Man” would delay its original 2024 release by three months and would now open wide on January 17, 2025. It had previously been scheduled for a pre-Halloween release on October 25, 2024. Production on “Wolf Man” wrapped in May 2024.
I’ve already mentioned how talented Whannell is — he has a ton of potential. In 2020’s “The Invisible Man,” Whannell brought a new kind of energy to old material, turning the classic story into an eerie Cronenberg-ian nightmare. Whannell’s previous film was the ultra-underrated low-budget sci-fi “Upgrade,” released in 2018, which again borrowed heavily from the hyper-violence of Paul Verhoeven and the body horror of Cronenberg.
Some more good news, “Wolf Man” is rated “R” for “bloody violent content, grisly images and some language.” So, it won’t be skimping on the goods, and seems to be going straight for the jugular.
