Earlier in the year, a teaser for “Snow White” was released. It might have taken the cake as the most hated teaser of 2024, having nabbed 1.4 million dislikes on YouTube. I don’t believe any other movie has come close to this kind of vitriol. A few months later, the full-length trailer was unveiled online, and it didn’t fare any better. It’s nabbed almost a million dislikes, and only 50k “likes.” That’s quite the ratio.
Last month, Forbes revealed that at the end of December 2023 “Snow White” had a budget that ballooned to $269M which forced Disney to admit in its Q4 filings that the film "was forecasted to be over the production budget."
Reshoots and post-production work have taken place since that date so the costs are set to surge in the next set of filings, which should be available around the time of its March 2025 theatrical release. The film has indeed blown past its originally intended budget ($180M) — no doubt, and mostly, due to multiple rounds of reshoots and rewrites, and after Peter Dinklage-led backlash, the sudden replacement of actor dwarves for CGI ones.
According to Forbes, as the cost is already $269M, this inevitable increase in budget should push it almost precisely in line with estimates assessed by some experts that "Disney's Snow White remake cost $300M," or more.
“Snow White” was written by none other than Greta Gerwig and is being directed by Marc Webb (“500 Days of Summer”). It stars Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot, Andrew Burnap, Ansu Kabia, Dujonna Gift and Martin Klebba. Not counting the additional reshoots, whic took place in 2023 and 2024, principal photography on the film began on March 7, 2022, and wrapped in June 2022.
With less than three months before it gets released, Disney must be very nervous about the prospects surrounding this film which has earned the wrath of movie fans worldwide. There was even a rumor that it might go straight to Disney+ but Disney recently confirmed their plans to release the “diverse and entertaining” film.
“Snow White” is set for release on March 21, 2025.
